The Netherlands is banning flights carrying passengers from the UK from Sunday, as Britain has detected a new strain of coronavirus.

The travel ban will remain in place until January 1, the government said in a statement Sunday, adding that it is monitoring developments and considering additional measures with respect to other means of transportation.

In measures to control the spread of the virus, the government issued a warning to “not travel” unless absolutely essential.

The ban came after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and scientists announced Saturday that the new strain of coronavirus identified in the country is up to 70% more infectious.
