The number of passengers at Frankfurt airport, Germany’s largest, fell in 2020 to its lowest level since 1984 due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Fraport, which operates Frankfurt airport, reported that it received about 18.8 million passengers in 2020, a decrease of 73.4% from the previous year. Aircraft movements at the airfield decreased 58.7% year-on-year to 212,235 takeoffs and landings in 2020.

In December, passenger traffic at the airport fell by 81.7% to 891,925 passengers. With 13,627 take-offs and landings, aircraft movements decreased by 62.8% year-on-year.
“We expect Frankfurt’s passenger traffic to recover significantly in the second half of 2021. Although we are confident that passenger traffic will exceed last year’s level, we still expect it to reach only 35 to 45 percent of the 2019 level,” said Fraport CEO Stefan Schulte.
