Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker made comments suggesting that the airline has become the launch customer for the Boeing 777X and will receive its first aircraft in 2023.
Speaking at a U.S.-Qatar Business Council event, Al Baker said, “Qatar Airways is also the launch customer for the Boeing 777X and is actively working with Boeing on the design and performance specifications for this new aircraft type.”

“We will take the 777X when it is ready. I believe Boeing has notified us that there will be a delay in the delivery of those airplanes until 2023, so in 2023 we will take delivery of our first three 777X airplanes.”
Boeing’s official position is that the first aircraft of the new 777X family will be delivered in 2023.
For the past several years, Lufthansa had been the launch customer for the Boeing 777X, but that seems to have changed.
