Melbourne Airport plans to build a third runway.
Melbourne Airport, located in the Australian state of Victoria, has unveiled plans to build a new 3,000-meter third runway at its facility.
Its proposal will be presented this Wednesday at an official exhibition and the community will be invited to give its opinion until mid-May.

The airport intends to build the third runway parallel to the current 16/34 runway in order to increase capacity by facilitating arrivals and departures.
The proposal to create the new runway would require shortening the existing 09/27 runway and modifying flight paths.
Despite the impact of Covid-19 on the aviation sector, Melbourne is forecasting an increase in annual passenger numbers of more than 76 million by 2042.

Prior to Covid-19, airlines and their customers frequently suffered delays at peak times due to the airport’s congested cross-runway system,” commented Melbourne Airport CEO Lyell Strambi.
“It is critical that a parallel runway is approved soon in order to meet Victoria’s future tourism, cargo and population needs. The approval process can take several years, with construction expected to take another four to five years, so we are moving forward with the proposal now,” added Strambi.
