Spain: Parallel runways at Barcelona-El Prat Airport change names denomination

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport has changed the denomination of its parallel runways. From Thursday, March 24, runway 25R/07L, the closest to Terminal T2, will be identified as 24R/06, while 25L/07R, closer to the sea, will become 24L/06R.

These changes are due to an orientation adjustment, since the runway head numbers are assigned based on the first two figures corresponding to the bearings, which gradually change due to the continuous variation of the position of magnetic North. This variation has meant that the airport runways are no longer oriented from headings 250º and 070º, but have changed to headings 240º and 060º, which now determine the new designations.

Runway 24R/06L, built in 1948 and subsequently extended on more than one occasion, is the airport’s main runway and is 3,352 m long and 60 m wide. Runway 24L/06R is the last of the airport’s three runways and was built in 2004. It is 2,660 m long and 60 m wide, equipped with the highest category beaconing facilities and ILS Category II/III systems at each end, allowing it to be used in both directions and in foggy conditions.
