Lufthansa is optimistic about the success of its possible bid to buy a stake in Italy’s ITA Airways, led by shipping group MSC, the German airline’s CEO Carsten Spohr said Monday.

“It will be very difficult for ITA against us. We have proven in Austria, Switzerland and Belgium to be that you can work well with us. So yes, I am optimistic because we have shown how the business model would work,” Spohr told a press conference.

ITA Airways to fly to Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo starting in June.

The Air France-KLM group would also be interested in making a potential investment for a majority stake in the Italian airline.

For its part, Delta Air Lines said in March that it wants to strengthen its commercial ties with ITA, but does not want to take an equity stake in Alitalia’s successor.
