Iberia and Repsol have teamed up to offer the airline’s corporate customers the purchase of sustainably sourced fuel (SAF), enabling them to reduce emissions and decarbonize their travel.

As part of the IAG group, Iberia is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and, to achieve this, is deploying a sustainability strategy with initiatives that directly impact the decarbonization of its flights.

The most relevant is fleet renewal: Iberia incorporated 13 new aircraft in 2022 and is investing heavily in Airbus A350s and Airbus A320neo, which are between 20 and 35 percent more efficient than the models they replace. This, coupled with various operational measures, will enable it to improve efficiency per passenger by 10 percent (grCO2/pax-km) by 2025.

Iberia grows in Madrid-Barcelona Air Shuttle: up to 15 flights per day

It was already recognized in 2022 by IBA as the second airline in the world to have reduced its emissions the most between 2019 and 2022; specifically by 17% per seat-kilometer on its long-haul flights, for which there is currently no more efficient alternative to air transport.

SAF, the future of the airline industry

In addition to renewing the fleet and increasing the efficiency of its operations, Iberia has teamed up with Repsol to promote the production of sustainably sourced fuels which, according to IATA, reduce CO2 emissions by 80% over their life cycle. Moreover, as they come from waste (from the forestry, agriculture, livestock and food industries) or mainly from CO2 capture, their production promotes the circular economy and the development of new technologies.

Current aircraft are certified to operate on up to 50% of these sustainably sourced fuels, which are considered a “drop in” technology, as they do not require any transformation in aircraft design or airport infrastructure.

Decarbonizing corporate travel

Iberia already offers its corporate customers a platform that allows them to calculate the emissions generated based on the type of flight, the aircraft operating the route, the cabin they are traveling in and the weather conditions.

With this calculation, corporate customers could until now offset these emissions through two projects in Peru and Guatemala that Iberia managed through the start-up CHOOOSE.

Based on the same calculation, companies can now also purchase PBS – supplied by REPSOLRepsol – to decarbonize their flights, or combine the use of these sustainably sourced fuels with the offset system, always choosing the proportion of their emissions they want to reduce.
