Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced this Monday that Mexicana de Aviación will start operations this year, after the Mexican Senate approved last Friday the creation of a military airline, which will be branded as Mexicana de Aviación.
Without giving too many details, the President said that he has spoken with Boeing executives to secure the fleet of airplanes that will operate for this new airline.
“I spoke with the general manager of Boeing to secure the airplanes that will be used in the Mexicana aviation line that will start operations this year,” revealed the president during his morning press conference.

Last April 28, the Mexican Senate approved the law reform that allows the creation of a new airline that will be run by the Army.
This airline, as announced by López Obrador last October, would bear the name of Mexicana, which was the oldest airline in the country since 1921 and had state participation, but declared bankruptcy in 2010 in a controversial process that has not yet been resolved and has kept its former workers in struggle.
At that time, the President informed that this new airline would be in charge of the Olmeca-Maya-Mexica company.
This company, under the responsibility of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), is also in charge of managing the Mayan Train, the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) in the capital and other airports in the Mexican Caribbean.
According to EFE, at the time the Mexican president explained that the state-owned airline, which would join privately-owned Aeroméxico, Volaris and VivaAerobus, would initially operate with 10 leased aircraft.
