Colombia: Wingo launches new route between Medellin and Santa Marta

Wingo launched its eighth new route in 2023 and with it achieves the largest growth process in its seven years of existence. The route between José María Córdova International Airport, which serves Medellín, and Simón Bolívar International Airport in Santa Marta, will begin on December 3.

The route will have four flights a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. In total, the airline will make available to travelers about 6 thousand seats per month between both routes. Flights are already available for sale, with promotional launch fares starting at COP 129,900 one way.

This will be the 38th route in Wingo’s network, the ninth served from Medellín’s José María Córdova Airport and the second served from Santa Marta’s Simón Bolívar Airport. In this way, the airline reaffirms its position as the only low cost airline available in the Colombian market.

“We continue to advance in our controlled growth process, with which we demonstrate that the low-cost model is indeed viable and sustainable in Colombia. This is undoubtedly great news for Medellín and Santa Marta, as it represents the return of the low-cost offer on this particular route. It also allows us to offer more direct domestic routes without the need to go through Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport,” said Jorge Jimenez, Wingo’s Vice President of Commercial and Planning.

Wingo grows in the Colombian domestic market

Of the eight new routes implemented this year, five have been domestic, evidencing the airline’s growth in the domestic market with the firm objective of offering low-cost seats to allow Colombians to have greater diversity of supply and fares.

For Medellín specifically, the connection with Santa Marta represents the third domestic route served by Wingo from José María Córdova, following the good performance of the increase implemented on the Medellín – Bogotá route, where up to five flights per day are already offered, and the launch of the Medellín-Cartagena route, which will begin operations on October 29.

Thus, Wingo now has 12 domestic routes in its network, reaching 50% of its seat capacity in 2023 in that market.
