Mexicana de Aviación, the new state-owned airline run by the Mexican Army, will begin operations on December 2 and has already begun selling tickets to 20 destinations.
The center of operations of the Mexican state-owned company will be the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), being the only destination and origin of the flights.
Last August, the Mexican government announced a “historic agreement” for 815 million pesos (almost US$48 million) for the Army to recover the brand for its new commercial airline.
The deal included the acquisition of three real estate properties and a flight simulator, while the money would be distributed among all former employees who had been struggling for 13 years, when Mexico’s then largest airline went bankrupt.

The release of Mexicana de Aviación’s first tickets for sale is in line with the plans outlined by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), Luis Cresencio Sandoval, who explained that it would begin operations with an investment of 4 billion dollars.
The investment estimated the purchase of 10 airplanes with which it will fly to the 20 destinations it will offer.
According to its website, flights can range from 519 pesos (US$29.4) for a destination such as Acapulco, flying from AIFA, while the return from the same location in the Mexican state of Guerrero can go up to 849 pesos (US$48).
A trip to Monterrey, in northern Mexico, can range from 519 pesos (US$29.4) to 799 pesos (US$45.2), while for Cancun prices range from 899 pesos (US$50.9) to 1,247 pesos (US$70.6).
For destinations such as Guadalajara or Merida, in the southeast, costs for flying from AIFA range from 529 pesos (US$29.9) to 819 pesos (US$43.5).
To fly to Tijuana from President López Obrador’s most recent airport, the price of a ticket can range from 649 pesos (US$36.7) to 1,799 pesos (US$101.8).
Mexicana de Aviación was incorporated as “Aerolínea del Estado Mexicano” (Mexican State Airline) last June 15, as a majority state-owned company.
The company states that its purpose “is to improve the quality and coverage of air services, as well as to promote connectivity in the market where there is demand, which will represent an engine for growth, development and competitiveness at a national and international level”.
