American Airlines said Friday that it received tentative approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to start nonstop flights between New York (JFK) and Tokyo-Haneda Airport, making it the only U.S. carrier to operate the route.
The airline said it plans to begin flights between JFK and Haneda in the coming months. Japan Airlines, American’s partner in the oneworld alliance, currently operates this route.

“American looks forward to beginning nonstop service to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport from JFK,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom. “We are grateful to the DOT and thankful to our partner Japan Airlines for supporting our application. Together, we are well-positioned to offer customers a comprehensive network between two of the most robust economies in the world”.
More nonstop service to Tokyo
The new service between JFK-Haneda will add to American’s daily service to the Japanese airport from Dallas-Fort Worth and twice-daily service from Los Angeles.
