Korean Airlines, South Korea’s largest carrier, confirmed Thursday that it will order 33 Airbus A350 jets (27 A350-1000s and six A350-900s) in a deal valued at $13.7 billion as it prepares its merger with Asiana Airlines.

This announcement comes at a time when Boeing is under intense scrutiny following the Alaska Airlines incident last January 5, with investigations into the company’s safety and quality standards in its production process.
Korean Air, which operates a mixed fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, said the order was for its long-term fleet planning as older aircraft retire and to meet sustainability goals.
