One person was killed Wednesday when he was sucked into a running engine of a KLM Cityhopper Embraer 190 aircraft at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in “a tragic incident” witnessed by passengers, the airfield and the Dutch gendarmerie announced.
As reported from Schiphol, there has been “a terrible incident in which a person has been sucked into the engine of an aircraft” and the Dutch gendarmerie is currently conducting an investigation to clarify what happened.

“Our thoughts are with the relatives and we are concerned for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this,” the airfield said in a brief note, in which it gave no further details of what happened.
Numerous passengers witnessed the deadly incident. On exiting the plane, they were attended to by the victim assistance services at the airport. At the moment, the identity of the deceased is unknown and it is unclear whether he is a passenger or an employee of Schiphol, according to the gendarmerie.
The accident has had no consequences for flight movements to and from Amsterdam airport, according to the Netherlands Air Traffic Control.
