Doha’s Hamad Airport reaches record passenger numbers in 2024

Hamad International Airport, located in Doha, Qatar, closed 2024 with historic figures that solidify its position as a key player in global aviation. Serving 52.7 million passengers—a 15% increase compared to the previous year—the airport showcases its capacity and commitment to leading in connectivity and quality services.

Growth in Passenger Traffic and Operations

Aircraft movements reached 279,000, reflecting a 10% annual increase. Additionally, 2.6 million tonnes of cargo were handled, a 12% rise compared to 2023. Baggage management efficiency also improved, with 41.3 million bags processed—a 10% increase.

These achievements were supported by recognition from the Airport Council International (ACI) in its 2024 Airport Industry Connectivity Report, where Hamad International Airport was ranked as the best-connected airport in the Middle East.

Increase in Local Tourism

For the first time, local passenger traffic grew by 16%, outpacing the growth rate of transfer traffic. This development reflects Doha’s rising appeal as a tourist destination and the joint efforts with Qatar Tourism to attract charter services. The airport managed over 12 million point-to-point passengers, highlighting its ability to handle high traffic volumes.

Expansion of Partnerships and New Connections

In 2024, Hamad International Airport expanded its global network to 197 destinations, with 55 airlines operating from its facilities. New airline partners included China Southern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Japan Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and Akasa Air. Qatar Airways, the flagship carrier, also added new routes to Osaka, Hamburg, Lisbon, and Toronto.

Air traffic to China surged by an impressive 87%, while other emerging markets in Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, also showed strong performance. In Europe, established destinations like the UK, Germany, Spain, and France experienced double-digit growth, reinforcing the airport’s global appeal.

Recognition and Promising Future

Hamad International Airport received the Skytrax World’s Best Airport Award in 2024, an achievement that underscores its dedication to delivering an exceptional passenger experience. According to Hamad Ali Al-Khater, the airport’s Chief Operating Officer, “These results reflect our vision of positioning Qatar as a global hub for connectivity, commerce, and tourism.”

The months of November and December 2024 marked a milestone as point-to-point passenger volumes surpassed those recorded during the FIFA World Cup 2022, further elevating Doha’s status as a premier destination.

Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Hamad International Airport plans to implement significant infrastructure enhancements. By mid-2025, additional passenger gates will be added to improve convenience, while global partnerships are strengthened, contributing to Qatar’s economic growth.

As it approaches its tenth anniversary, Hamad International Airport positions itself not only as a leader in the aviation sector but also as a key driver of Qatar’s global prominence.
