Honduras’ aviation industry is set to take a significant step forward with the arrival of Transportes Aéreos de Honduras (TAH Airlines), a new airline planning to commence operations in March of this year. This project, described as an important stimulus for the tourism sector by lawyer Donaldo Suazo, a member of the National Chamber of Tourism of Honduras (Canaturh), aims to invigorate tourism and strengthen the country’s air connectivity.
Certification and Operational Advances
TAH Airlines has received a public air transport certificate for both domestic and international operations from the Honduran Civil Aviation Agency (AHAC). The company is currently in the final stages of certification, a crucial step before officially launching operations.
In November 2024, the airline acquired its first aircraft, a Boeing 737-400, from the Ecuadorian airline Aeroregional. This aircraft recently arrived at Ramón Villeda Morales Airport in San Pedro Sula to undergo flight tests, marking a significant milestone in the company’s progress.
Initial Routes and Destinations
TAH Airlines plans to operate flights from Toncontín International Airport in Tegucigalpa and Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport in Roatán. The initial destinations will include Mexico City, Havana (Cuba), Panama City, and Georgetown (Guyana).
Impact on Tourism
According to Suazo, the arrival of TAH Airlines is a unique opportunity to revitalize tourism in Honduras. “Air connectivity is one of the great competitive advantages a country can have,” he stated. The airline will enable direct connections between Honduras and destinations currently underserved by other carriers, diversifying the tourism offering.
Competitiveness and Pricing
Suazo also emphasized the importance of fostering competition in the aviation sector. With more airlines operating in the country, ticket prices could decrease, making Honduras a more attractive and accessible destination for international tourists.
Additionally, recent improvements in the country’s airport infrastructure create a favorable scenario for the expansion of new airlines. However, Suazo stressed that attracting more companies is still necessary to fully capitalize on the benefits of these improvements.
