Helvetic Airways has set a new precedent in aviation history with the arrival of the Embraer E195-E2 at London City Airport. This Wednesday, the state-of-the-art jet touched down for the first time on the London airport’s runway, marking it as the largest aircraft to operate regularly from this terminal.
With a length of 41.5 meters and a capacity for 134 passengers, the E195-E2 not only expands the airport’s operational capabilities but also sets a new standard in efficiency. This Embraer model is the most fuel-efficient per seat among all aircraft operating at London City, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability and innovation.
A Technical Challenge Successfully Overcome
London City Airport is known for its demanding operational requirements due to its steep approach, which necessitates highly skilled crews and specialized aircraft. Helvetic Airways has demonstrated its capability by becoming the first airline to land an Embraer E195-E2 at this airport, following a similar milestone in 2021 with the E190-E2.
“We are proud to be the first airline to bring the E195-E2 to London City, solidifying our position as the only airline in the world to operate three different Embraer models at this airport,” stated Tobias Pogorevc, CEO of Helvetic Airways.

The flight, operated as a wet-lease service for Swiss International Air Lines, departed Zurich at 11:30 a.m. and landed in London just after noon, receiving a warm welcome from the airport and the industry.
Industry Impact and the Future of London City
The milestone achieved by Helvetic Airways has also been celebrated by the airport and Embraer. “We are delighted to welcome the first commercial flight of the E195-E2. Its arrival underscores our commitment to introducing quieter and more efficient aircraft,” said Alison FitzGerald, CEO of the London airport.
Marie-Louise Philippe, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Embraer Commercial Aviation, highlighted the significance of the E195-E2 for the industry’s evolution: “With 30% lower CO2 emissions per seat and a 63% smaller noise footprint, this model is the most efficient and sustainable aircraft certified to operate at London City.”
Technological Innovations: The E2TS System
Embraer also announced advancements in technology with the development of the automated E2TS (Embraer Enhanced Takeoff System). Once certified, this system will extend the E195-E2’s range from London City from 3,200 km to 4,000 km, enabling new routes to destinations such as Istanbul, Gran Canaria, Casablanca, Athens, and Cairo.
This achievement not only represents a leap forward for Helvetic Airways but also redefines the regional aviation landscape in Europe, driving connectivity and sustainability in the air travel sector.
