Iberia announced this Wednesday a significant increase in its Madrid-San Juan, Puerto Rico route. During the 2025/26 winter season, the airline will operate up to 11 weekly flights on this route for the first time. This growth marks an unprecedented expansion of Iberia’s presence in the Caribbean.

The increased flight frequency will add 16,190 additional seats between October 2025 and March 2026, positively impacting the local economy with an estimated contribution of $32 million during fiscal year 2026.

María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Director of Commercial, Customer, and Network Development & Alliances, welcomed the announcement, emphasizing Puerto Rico’s importance in the airline’s Latin America and Caribbean strategy. “For the second consecutive year, we are increasing our capacity on this route. Last year, we achieved a daily flight, and this new increase underscores our commitment to a market that has shown exceptional performance,” said López Solás.

Meanwhile, Robles Cancel, a representative of the Puerto Rican government, highlighted that this expansion strengthens the island’s connectivity with key European cities, benefiting both tourism and trade relations. “We take great pride in Iberia’s growth in Puerto Rico. The Tourism Company’s negotiations have allowed us to strengthen our presence in key markets,” he stated. He also noted that the move aligns with the administration’s strategy under Governor Jenniffer González to boost tourism development and improve the island’s air access.

Greater Flexibility and New Options for Passengers

The new schedule, effective October 28, 2025, will offer travelers greater flexibility for both tourism and business. The flights will be operated with two types of aircraft:

  • Airbus A321XLR, with a capacity for 182 passengers, offering one daily flight.
  • Airbus A330-200, with 288 seats, operating four times per week.

This diversification of aircraft will help meet growing demand with more efficient and tailored service for passengers.

Strategic Agreement to Promote Tourism

During the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) held in Madrid in January 2025, the Puerto Rican government, the Tourism Company, and Iberia signed an agreement to promote the island as a tourist destination in Europe. This commitment, combined with the increased flights, will facilitate the arrival of more visitors to the Caribbean, solidifying Puerto Rico as an attractive destination for European travelers seeking unique experiences.

With this expansion, Iberia reaffirms its leadership in the region and strengthens the air bridge between Spain and the Caribbean, opening new opportunities for tourism and commerce.
