WestJet Group announced on Wednesday that it has officially completed the integration of Sunwing Airlines. This two-year process marks the full unification of its narrow-body aircraft operations under WestJet Airlines’ Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
Alexis von Hoensbroech, CEO of the group, highlighted the complexity of the process: “Completing two consolidations in just two years—first Swoop in 2024 and now Sunwing—was a challenge that spanned operational, labor, regulatory, and cultural aspects. This achievement is a testament to our team’s commitment and our transformation within Canadian aviation.”
Strategic Acquisition and Operational Transformation
WestJet acquired Sunwing in May 2023 as part of its vision to lead the affordable leisure travel market in Canada. The integration, finalized on May 29, 2025, aims to deliver more competitive options and better value in the sun-and-leisure travel segment, coming at a pivotal time for strengthening the country’s tourism industry.
With this consolidation, WestJet now operates a fleet of 150 Boeing 737 aircraft, including: 16 aircraft from the defunct Swoop, 9 from the former Lynx Air, and 18 from Sunwing Airlines.

All these aircraft will be reconfigured throughout 2025 to align with WestJet’s standard cabin design, enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency.
More Options for Canadian Travelers
The unified fleet will offer a standardized yet diverse cabin experience, with seating options such as Premium, Economy, Extended Comfort, and UltraBasic.
This approach addresses growing passenger demand for a variety of products and price points without compromising coverage or quality.
The Sunwing Vacations brand, along with its wholly owned tour operators, will remain active as the most popular choice among Canadians. Now, travelers booking vacations with Sunwing and flying with WestJet will enjoy an improved travel experience, thanks to more integrated and customer-centric booking processes.
Honoring a Legacy
Sunwing’s final flight this week symbolizes the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. Von Hoensbroech remarked: “Sunwing has been a cornerstone in the development of Canadian tourism. Every employee, past and present, has left their mark. This achievement belongs to them. It’s a source of pride for all of us.”
With this integration, WestJet strengthens its position in the domestic market and redefines travel for millions of Canadians: more options, better service, and a new standard in leisure flights.
