In an unexpected move, the Venezuelan government announced on Monday, May 19, the immediate suspension of all flights originating from Colombia. The decision, communicated by the Minister of Interior, Justice, and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, is based on national security concerns.
Cabello stated that the airspace closure was prompted by the detection of individuals who, according to authorities, were entering the country posing as tourists but were allegedly involved in subversive activities. “They are mercenaries,” the official asserted during a public statement.

According to Cabello, these individuals are suspected of participating in actions aimed at destabilizing the country ahead of the legislative and state elections scheduled for May 25. “We warn the public about the firm response they will receive from Venezuelan authorities,” he cautioned.
The decision comes amid heightened political tensions. Cabello revealed that 38 people are currently detained in the country for alleged involvement in “conspiratorial plans.”
Per the NOTAM, the suspension of flights between the two countries is in effect until May 26.
