Mega Air Alliance: IndiGo, Delta, Air France-KLM, and Virgin Atlantic to Connect India with Europe and North America

Four major airlines—IndiGo, Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, and Virgin Atlantic—have announced an ambitious strategic partnership aimed at linking India’s growing domestic network with key markets in Europe and North America. This collaboration seeks not only to expand connectivity but also to set new standards for international cooperation and customer experience.

Through this alliance, dozens of cities across India, the United States, Canada, and Europe will be connected, addressing the rising demand for international travel and creating an unparalleled network in terms of coverage and convenience.

The Driving Force: India and Its Unstoppable Growth

India, one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, is the strategic focal point of this initiative. IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, aspires to become a global carrier by 2030. According to its CEO, Pieter Elbers, this alliance marks a critical step in its long-range expansion plans, set to begin this summer, and will facilitate seamless intercontinental travel with enhanced loyalty benefits.

Additionally, the agreement will enable IndiGo to exchange best practices in technology, operational excellence, and customer service with its partners.

What the Leaders Say

Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines, emphasized that this alliance reflects Delta’s commitment to a more connected and inclusive aviation industry. Delta also plans to resume direct flights between Atlanta and Delhi, pending government approval, with a start date yet to be announced.

Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM, highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian market, where the group has a strong historical presence that will now expand further. Starting in September 2025, KLM will launch a new route between Amsterdam and Hyderabad, enabling IndiGo to sell flights to 24 destinations beyond that city.

Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, celebrated the timing of this alliance, coinciding with the airline’s 25th anniversary of flying to India, and underscored the benefits for travelers: greater connectivity, improved schedules, and enhanced loyalty rewards.

Operational and Commercial Integration

Since 2022, Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic have offered their passengers access to over 30 IndiGo destinations in India. With this new announcement, the integration goes even further: once commercial contracts and regulatory approvals are finalized, IndiGo will be able to sell flights operated by its international partners under its own codes, simplifying bookings for multiple destinations.

Key connections will include:

This structure will allow customers to enjoy unified bookings and a more seamless travel experience across continents.

Fleet and Future Plans

IndiGo is bolstering its long-haul capabilities. This year, it will expand its Boeing 787 fleet with six wet-leased aircraft and has a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s, with options for 70 more. This expansion will further strengthen its cooperation with Delta, Air France-KLM, and Virgin Atlantic.

Beyond Flights: Comprehensive Cooperation

The memorandum of understanding also establishes a framework for collaboration beyond passenger transport. It includes potential synergies in loyalty programs, cargo, sales, and aircraft maintenance. Additionally, it outlines joint initiatives in sustainability, training, ground services, and the development of advanced technologies for efficient shared customer service.

This mega alliance not only enhances connectivity between India, Europe, and North America—it also redefines how airlines can work together in a highly competitive global landscape.
