Air India announced that it will begin restoring its flight schedule starting in August, following a temporary reduction prompted by the fatal crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in June.

The airline, which is undergoing a transformation under the new management of Tata Group—its owner since 2022—confirmed in a statement issued this Tuesday that it will increase frequencies from Delhi to three key destinations: London Heathrow, Tokyo, and Zurich. Additionally, starting in September, it will add more flights to Seoul.

The airline’s goal is clear: to return to its full schedule by October 1, after implementing a “safety pause” following the incident.

Flight 171 Accident: Details of the Tragedy

On June 12, Air India Flight 171 crashed in the western city of Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board; only one survived. The tragedy shocked the country and forced the airline to review its operations.

Air India Crash Preliminary Report Raises More Questions, CEO Says

According to a preliminary report released last week by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the cause of the crash was the activation of two fuel switches in the cockpit that were placed in the “cut-off” position. This led to the Boeing 787 losing lift and subsequently plummeting just 32 seconds after takeoff.

Transformation Under Pressure

The accident occurred amid Tata Group’s restructuring efforts to modernize and make Air India profitable after decades under state control. This forced operational pause represented a momentary setback in the renewal plan, but the gradual return of flights demonstrates a firm intention to get back on track.

Looking Ahead

With the announcement of the progressive restoration of key international routes, Air India is betting on regaining passenger trust and stabilizing its operations. If it achieves its goal of returning to 100% of its schedule by October, it will mark an important step in its post-accident recovery.

The challenge is no small feat: returning to the skies is not just about taking off—it’s also about rebuilding a reputation tarnished by a tragedy that still resonates.
