Air India announced on Monday that it will discontinue its direct route between Delhi and Washington D.C. effective September 1, 2025. The decision stems from a combination of operational factors aimed at ensuring the stability and efficiency of its long-haul network.
Fleet Modernization Impact
The primary reason behind this suspension is a temporary shortage of available aircraft. Last month, the airline launched an ambitious modernization program for 26 of its Boeing 787-8s, significantly upgrading the onboard experience.
This process means multiple aircraft will be out of service simultaneously until at least late 2026.

Airspace Restrictions and Longer Routes
Compounding the reduced fleet availability is the prolonged closure of Pakistani airspace, which forces detours for long-haul flights. This increases route durations and adds operational complexity, posing a logistical challenge for the airline.
Alternatives for Passengers
Passengers with bookings to or from Washington D.C. after September 1 will be contacted directly by Air India. They will be offered options such as rebooking on alternative flights or a full refund, based on their preference.
Those wishing to retain their destination can do so via connecting flights through four U.S. cities: New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco. Thanks to interline agreements with Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, passengers can travel on a single ticket and check their baggage through to their final destination.
Presence in North America
Despite the suspension of the Washington D.C. route, Air India will continue operating non-stop flights between India and six North American cities, including Toronto and Vancouver, maintaining connectivity with key continental markets.
