ITA Airways and United Airlines have announced a new codeshare agreement aimed at enhancing air connectivity between Italy and the United States. Tickets under this arrangement are already available, and the flights will begin operating starting September 15th.
This move reinforces ITA Airways’ expansion strategy, which focuses on increasing long-haul connections and diversifying intercontinental destinations from its Rome Fiumicino hub.
ITA Airways’ Vision
Joerg Eberhart, CEO and Managing Director of ITA Airways, highlighted the importance of this step for the company: “The agreement with United Airlines represents a significant advancement in our strategy to expand our network to new intercontinental destinations. We are consolidating our presence in the U.S. market—our second most relevant after the domestic one—by offering more options to reach additional cities in the U.S. through our new strategic partner. Likewise, we will welcome North American passengers on our flights from Rome Fiumicino to Italian and international destinations. This initiative is part of a growth plan that will continue with our integration into Star Alliance in 2026, as part of the process of joining the Lufthansa Group.”
United Airlines’ Commitment
Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines, underscored the relevance of this cooperation: “United has operated in Italy for over 33 years and currently offers direct services from Rome, Milan, Naples, Venice, and Palermo to the United States. We share with ITA Airways a commitment to providing customers with more choices, more destinations, and more opportunities to explore. This loyalty and codeshare agreement will create a smoother travel experience and superior connectivity across both networks.”
Benefits for Passengers
The codeshare agreement will allow travelers to:
- Book a single ticket for a seamless journey to their final destination on connecting flights operated by the partner airline.
- Accumulate and redeem miles in the Volare (ITA Airways) and MileagePlus (United Airlines) frequent flyer programs.
- Access VIP lounges based on their loyalty program membership tier.
New Destinations on Both Sides of the Atlantic
Thanks to this agreement, ITA Airways customers will gain access to new cities in the United States, including: Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, and Newark.
These connections complement the Italian airline’s Summer 2025 schedule, which already includes flights to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York (JFK), San Francisco, and Washington.
Conversely, United Airlines passengers will be able to expand their travel options within Italy, with access to destinations such as Bari, Bologna, Florence, Catania, and Turin. Furthermore, they will have increased connecting alternatives to Rome and Milan through United’s gateways in Europe.
