Ryanair announced this Wednesday that the exclusive use of digital boarding passes will come into effect on 12 November. The measure, initially planned for 3 November, has been postponed by one week to facilitate a smooth transition during a period of lower demand following the mid-term holidays.

From that date onwards, passengers will no longer be able to download or print a physical pass. Boarding will be carried out solely with the digital boarding pass generated in the “myRyanair” app during the check-in process.

A Firm Commitment to Digital Transformation

This initiative is part of the airline’s technological modernization strategy. Ryanair carries more than 206 million customers per year. In recent months, Ryanair has enhanced its mobile app with features that improve the travel experience, especially in situations involving disruptions:

  • Order from Your Seat: The ability to order food and drink from your phone for priority service.
  • Real-Time Information: Instant updates on boarding, assigned gates, and delays.
  • Direct Alerts from the Operations Centre: Immediate notifications in case of disruptions.

Currently, almost 80% of users already utilize the digital pass, reinforcing the feasibility of this definitive change.

Global Trend Towards Digital

Ryanair’s decision follows the path of other industries linked to entertainment, such as festivals, concerts, and sporting events, which have successfully adopted digital tickets as the only valid format. With this update, the airline aims to streamline processes and offer a service better suited to current consumption habits.

Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Marketing Director, explained the reasons for the change in a statement: “To ensure a smooth transition for our customers to the exclusive use of digital boarding passes, we will make the change starting Wednesday, 12 November, which is typically a slightly quieter period for travel after the busy mid-term holidays. Ryanair’s move to 100% digital boarding passes will mean a faster, smarter, and more eco-friendly travel experience for our customers, optimized through our myRyanair app, where passengers will also benefit from useful features like Order from Your Seat and real-time flight information.”

With this step, Ryanair consolidates its leadership in innovation within the European air sector. The goal is to offer a more agile, intelligent, and eco-friendly journey, while simultaneously reinforcing the reliance on its app as the central point of interaction with passengers.
