Singapore Airlines is preparing to retire its last Boeing 737-800 before the end of this October, marking the end of an era spanning over ten years of operations with this model. The aircraft that will bring this story to a close is the 9V-MGN, the last active unit of a fleet that once numbered 16 aircraft.
The final flight of the Boeing 737-800 is scheduled for October 26, 2025.
A Legacy That Began with SilkAir
The first 737-800s were delivered to SilkAir, the former regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, starting in February 2014. With the full integration of SilkAir in May 2021, these aircraft became part of the main company’s fleet. At that time, Singapore Airlines inherited 15 of these aircraft, of which only one remains in service today.
Over the past few years, the airline has been gradually retiring the 737-800s as it received new Boeing 737 MAX 8s. The first was retired in 2022, followed by more units in 2024 and the remainder progressively throughout 2025.

Efficiency, Comfort, and Modernization
The retirement of the 737-800s is part of a clear strategy: to improve operational efficiency and offer a more consistent and modern flight experience. The 737-800s are more expensive to operate and provide an inferior passenger experience compared to the 737 MAX 8s, which feature fully reclining seats in business class (ten in total) and onboard Wi-Fi connectivity for all passengers.
A New Era for Short-Haul Flights
Singapore Airlines currently has 19 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in service and expects the delivery of seven additional units from the American manufacturer. This move solidifies its strategy for the short-haul segment, placing full confidence in this model to cover regional routes.
