American Airlines is taking its growth plan in Chicago to a new level with a historic expansion of its operations at O’Hare International Airport. Starting next spring, the company will add 100 additional daily departures, boosting its schedule to more than 75 popular destinations. This strategic move is designed to respond to high demand during the spring break travel period and strengthen its network at one of the United States’ most important airports.
This will be American’s largest-ever spring operation at O’Hare, a milestone that not only increases flight availability but also expands connection options, destinations, and experiences for travelers. The initiative is part of a comprehensive plan that has already directly impacted customer experience, operational reliability, and the airline’s historic presence in the Chicago community.
A Key Boost for the Spring Season
The expansion will provide passengers with more options to fly within American’s global network while also strengthening tourist flow into the city. The airline will add 100 daily peak-hour departures, increasing frequencies on 75 markets, including Boston (BOS), Cincinnati (CVG), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Fort Myers (RSW), and Orlando (MCO).
Furthermore, the company will double its capacity from Chicago to highly sought-after vacation destinations such as Las Vegas (LAS), Panama City, Florida (ECP), and Sarasota (SRQ). This is in addition to offering more than double the originally planned service for spring 2026 to Savannah (SAV) and San Francisco (SFO), bolstering both leisure and corporate traffic.
With these adjustments, the operation will reach over 500 daily departures during peak season, representing a 30% increase compared to the previous spring. This volume solidifies O’Hare as American’s third-largest global hub and places it among the top 10 largest connection centers for all U.S. airlines, in addition to making it the fastest-growing legacy hub of the year.

Strengthening the International Network from O’Hare
The operational strengthening is not limited to the domestic market. American announced the extension of its summer seasonal service from Chicago to Dublin, which will operate for approximately one additional month, and to Paris, whose season will be extended by three months compared to previous years. These routes are part of the airline’s international network and its connectivity strategy with global partners.
The current growth originates from a major expansion that began in summer 2025, when the company increased its offering by 20% more flights and 22% more seats compared to summer 2024. Since then, nearly 30 new destinations have been added to the O’Hare network, including Honolulu (HNL), Mexico City (MEX), Madrid (MAD), and the only direct flight from Chicago to Naples (NAP).
During the winter, American also doubled frequencies to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, becoming the leading airline from O’Hare to that region, in addition to reinforcing traditional business routes such as Seattle (SEA), Houston (IAH), and Fayetteville/Bentonville (XNA).
Chicago as a Strategic Connection Hub
Airline hubs function as true “connection factories,” driving the local economy, business development, and access to global markets. In this context, American’s expansion at O’Hare increases opportunities for tourism and business, while also offering smaller cities access to an international network with efficient connections.
The addition of destinations like Cedar Rapids (CID), Bloomington (BMI), and Flint (FNT) extends the regional reach of the hub, facilitating long-haul travel and strengthening connectivity for communities that rely on indirect links.
As the country’s largest dual-hub airport, O’Hare benefits from strong competition among airlines, which has historically kept fares lower and offered greater variety. With three new daily peak-hour departures to San Francisco (SFO) and Cleveland (CLE), plus two additional ones to Denver (DEN), customers now have more alternatives to fly from, to, and through Chicago.
Improvements in Passenger Experience and Loyalty
The operational growth is accompanied by a customer-centric strategy. During the third quarter, enrollments in the AAdvantage® loyalty program grew 7% systemwide, with Chicago leading the advance at approximately 20%—more than double the overall average.
Highlighted improvements include a redesigned mobile application, technology to protect connections, and the introduction of the Boeing 787-9 with a premium configuration, which is becoming the primary aircraft for the Chicago–London route.
On the operational side, investments in boarding processes, technological devices, baggage handling, and aircraft pushback optimization have contributed to more reliable operations. As a result, American was the most punctual hub airline at O’Hare during the year.
The recent acquisition of two new boarding gates allowed the addition of three more destinations, reaching 29 new additions at O’Hare during 2025. Moreover, following the update of all regional flights to dual-class aircraft, American became the only hub airline offering premium options on every departure from Chicago.
A Long-Term Commitment to Chicago
“We are committed to rebuilding our hub in Chicago to make it stronger and more attractive for our customers,” said Steve Johnson, Vice President and Director of Strategy at American Airlines. He explained that the plans for 2026 reflect a phase marked by bold investments, coinciding with the airline’s centennial and its 100 years of operation at O’Hare.
The investments made in 2025 lay the groundwork for a record-setting 2026, reaffirming American’s commitment to its passengers, employees, and the communities of the Chicago metropolitan area, as well as to its historical legacy and future vision at one of the world’s most significant aviation hubs.
