Etihad Airways Launches First Non-Stop Route Between Middle East and Calgary, Canada

Etihad Airways has announced a high-impact strategic move for intercontinental connectivity: the launch of the first direct flight in history between the Middle East and Calgary, in Western Canada. This milestone route between Abu Dhabi and Calgary is scheduled to begin operations on November 3, 2026. The expansion reinforces Abu Dhabi’s standing as a global hub for trade, tourism, and investment.

An Air Corridor Between Two Global Economic Powerhouses

This direct connection bridges two strategic centers with significant weight in the global economy:

By eliminating previously unavoidable layovers between the Middle East and Western Canada, this flight creates a streamlined corridor for corporate travel, commercial exchange, and sector collaboration. The immediate impact on competitiveness includes reduced travel time, increased operational predictability, and more efficient connectivity for executives and high-value cargo.

Calgary Joins Etihad’s Long-Haul Expansion

Calgary is the latest addition to Etihad’s long-haul portfolio, following recent expansions into cities such as Luxembourg and Palma de Mallorca. The airline’s strategy remains consistent: opening markets with clear economic, commercial, and tourism potential beyond traditional major hubs.

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, described the Abu Dhabi–Calgary service as a “significant and historic step”. He emphasized that the route is specifically designed to deepen regional economic ties and generate new investment and tourism opportunities at both ends of the journey.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: Operational Backbone

The route will be serviced by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a cornerstone of Etihad’s long-range fleet. The aircraft will feature the company’s latest Business and Economy cabins, which are highly regarded for their focus on comfort and efficiency during ultra-long-haul flights.

Strengthening the North American Presence

This new destination solidifies Etihad’s footprint in the North American market. The airline currently operates flights to Toronto, New York and Chicago.

Additionally, Etihad plans to launch services to Charlotte starting in March. Adding Calgary to this list is a key move to diversify its Canadian presence beyond the country’s traditional eastern axis.
