Qantas Group marked a new operational milestone today by deploying the Airbus A220 on its first scheduled international flight, inaugurating the Brisbane–Wellington route with this next-generation aircraft. This move represents more than just a technical update; it confirms a structural shift in how the Australian airline plans to serve its regional, trans-Tasman, and Pacific markets.
The A220 will operate up to three weekly frequencies between Brisbane and the New Zealand capital, introducing an aircraft that is more efficient, quieter, and possesses greater range capabilities than the models it replaces.
Airbus A220: Operational Efficiency and Network Flexibility
From a technical standpoint, the Airbus A220 provides clear advantages over the previous generation of narrow-body aircraft. According to data provided by Qantas, the model offers:
- Up to 25% lower fuel consumption, directly reducing the cost per seat.
- A significantly smaller noise footprint, an increasingly relevant factor for airports with environmental restrictions.
- Greater range, enabling new network opportunities as the fleet grows.
These characteristics make the A220 an ideal platform for medium-density routes, where the balance between capacity, efficiency, and passenger experience is critical.

Cabin Configuration and Onboard Experience
The QantasLink A220 is configured for 137 passengers, distributed across two cabins designed by David Caon—a designer already synonymous with the group’s product standards:
Cabin Class Configuration Key Features
- Business Class
10 seats (2-2)
Wireless charging pads
USB-A and USB-C ports
- Economy Class
127 seats (2-3)
Integrated personal device holders
USB-A and USB-C ports in every row
This is complemented by one of the A220’s most distinctive attributes: the largest windows of any single-aisle aircraft, providing a cabin that conveys a greater sense of spaciousness. The product is rounded out with fast, free Wi-Fi, an increasingly decisive factor for corporate and long-haul regional travelers.
An Expanding Fleet Within a Renewal Program
The international debut of the A220 is part of the most ambitious fleet renewal program in Qantas Group history, which includes more than 200 new aircraft on order.
Currently, QantasLink has already received 11 Airbus A220s, and the company expects to incorporate four additional units before mid-year. This will accelerate the opening of new routes and the progressive replacement of less efficient aircraft.
Mark Dal Pra, CEO of QantasLink, highlighted the strategic value of this milestone:
“Today is a significant moment in our fleet renewal program. Customer feedback on the A220 has been fantastic and we are truly excited to see the aircraft begin operating its first scheduled international route”.
Dal Pra further emphasized Brisbane’s role within the group’s network, noting that the size and economics of the A220 make it an ideal choice for multiple trans-Tasman and Pacific routes.
Further International Growth from Brisbane
The announcement of the A220’s debut coincides with a new expansion of Qantas’s international network from Brisbane. Starting March 29, 2026, the airline will increase its flights between Brisbane and Honiara (Solomon Islands) from four to five weekly frequencies.
This route will continue to be operated by Embraer 190 aircraft and is primarily aimed at business travelers, reinforcing the group’s presence in the South Pacific and its strategic commitment to the Queensland capital.
While Qantas has not yet detailed which other international routes might benefit from the A220 in the short term, its combination of range, efficiency, and capacity suggests that this Brisbane–Wellington debut is merely the first step in a deeper reconfiguration of the airline’s regional and international network.
