Air Canada has reached a strategic milestone with the entry into service of its first updated Boeing 737 MAX 8 within its leisure subsidiary, Air Canada Rouge. This modernization phase not only elevates the onboard experience but also bolsters connectivity across key North American and Caribbean routes.
Renewing Air Canada Rouge Experience
The induction of the 737 MAX 8 represents the latest advancement in Rouge’s comprehensive cabin flying program, designed to offer a more comfortable, connected, and consistent service. Passengers traveling on leisure and sun destination routes can now enjoy updated interiors including:
- Seatback personal entertainment systems.
- Enhanced seat recline for all customers.
- Fast, complimentary Wi-Fi connectivity, sponsored by Bell.
Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at Air Canada, emphasized that this renewal program aims for customers to consistently feel “comfort, care, and pride” on every flight, supported by award-winning service.

Strategic Expansion and New Vancouver Base
To support this leisure-focused growth, Air Canada has inaugurated a new Rouge crew base in Vancouver, coinciding with the debut of the 737 MAX 8. This investment facilitates increased frequencies to sun destinations from Western Canada, including the return of winter service from Calgary to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.
Cabin Specifications and Premium Dining
The 737 MAX 8 cabin configuration for Rouge has been optimized for short and medium-haul sectors, offering:
- 12 Business Class seats.
- 18 Preferred seats with extra legroom.
- 147 Standard Economy Class seats.
Furthermore, the airline has upgraded its complimentary dining offerings, including wine, beer (with non-alcoholic options), and premium snacks from Canadian brands such as MadeGood, TWIGZ, and Leclerc Célébration cookies.
A Long-Haul Future: Global Fleet Modernization
Air Canada’s transformation is not limited to its leisure subsidiary. The airline is executing a modernization plan that spans its entire network:
- Narrowbody Fleet Modernization: The Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 aircraft currently operated by Rouge will be retrofitted to Air Canada’s latest design standards.
- Air Canada Express: Regional aircraft operated by Jazz will also receive new cabins and next-generation Wi-Fi.
- New Inductions: The company awaits the arrival of its first Airbus A321XLRs from an order of 30 units, while continuing to take delivery of the Airbus A220, with 23 aircraft pending from an order of 65.
- Long-Haul Fleet: A recent order for eight Airbus A350-1000s was announced, which will join the 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners scheduled to begin operations later this year.
These new aircraft will incorporate Air Canada’s next-generation cabin design, ensuring superior standards in connectivity and onboard entertainment for all passengers.
