Air India Bolsters Asian Expansion with New Direct Routes to Vietnam and Japan

Air India has announced the launch of two new international routes to Hanoi and Tokyo (Haneda) as part of its ongoing growth strategy across the Asian continent. These services aim to strengthen the airline’s presence in high-growth markets and deepen commercial ties between India and these nations.

Consolidation in Vietnam: New Connection to Hanoi

Starting May 1, 2026, Air India will operate direct flights between Delhi (DEL) and Hanoi (HAN), making the city its second destination in Vietnam after Ho Chi Minh City (SGN).

Operational Route Details

This expansion facilitates “Open Jaw” itineraries, allowing travelers the flexibility to enter Vietnam via Hanoi and depart through Ho Chi Minh City, or vice versa. Additionally, these flights will provide convenient connections to destinations in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe via the airline’s global hub network.

Strengthening Connectivity with Japan

The carrier is also set to expand its Far East network with a new non-stop service between Mumbai (BOM) and Tokyo (HND) effective June 15, 2026. This route will operate four times per week utilizing Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

Enhanced Onboard Experience

Air India has implemented significant upgrades to its existing Japanese services:

Strategic Alliance with ANA

Through a codeshare agreement with All Nippon Airways (ANA), a fellow Star Alliance member, Air India passengers can connect from Haneda Airport to six key Japanese cities: Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo.

Strategic Vision: Post-Privatization Growth

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Air India, noted that since the company’s privatization, the network has been optimized across Southeast Asia and the Far East. According to the executive, both Japan and Vietnam are priority destinations due to the surge in Indian outbound travelers and the strengthening of bilateral trade relations.

With these new routes, Air India reaffirms its commitment to deploying superior cabin products and offering more efficient transcontinental connections.
