Brazilian carrier Azul has officially commenced operations between Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and Montevideo, Uruguay. This new strategic connection aims to bolster regional connectivity and provide Uruguayan passengers with direct access to one of the airline’s primary hubs within Brazilian territory.
Operational Details of the New Route
- Frequency: Two weekly flights, operating on Wednesdays and Sundays.
- Aircraft: Flights are operated using Embraer 195-E2 equipment, featuring a capacity of 136 passengers.
- Duration: The short-haul segment lasts approximately two hours and 40 minutes.
Connectivity and Expansion via Belo Horizonte Hub
Beyond the point-to-point link, this operation integrates Montevideo into the dense network of destinations managed from Azul’s base in Belo Horizonte. According to César Grandolfo, Director of Institutional Relations at Azul, the departure airport handles over 110 daily flights.

This network allows Uruguayan travelers to make rapid connections to:
- Domestic Destinations: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and various cities throughout the Brazilian Northeast.
- International Destinations: Connections toward Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Curaçao.
Diego Carluccio, Commercial Manager of Aeropuertos Uruguay, highlighted the confidence in the potential of this hub to channel traffic toward the Caribbean and the United States.
Impact on Tourism and Future Outlook
The inaugural flight reached maximum capacity, a signal that airport authorities describe as “highly positive” for tourism growth, including local destinations such as Punta del Este.
From the airline’s perspective, while the service begins with two frequencies, the intention is to maintain a long-term developmental vision. “We continue to look at Uruguay with the intent of further expanding connectivity between Brazil and Montevideo,” Grandolfo concluded.
