Brazilian carrier GOL has formally initiated its foray into the long-haul market with the announcement of a new non-stop route between Rio de Janeiro and New York, supported by the future induction of widebody aircraft into its fleet. This strategic move marks a milestone in the airline’s evolution; until now, its U.S. connectivity was centered on Florida using narrowbody aircraft.
Direct Connection Between “Marvelous City” and JFK
The airline opened ticket sales this Friday for its new operation between Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport (GIG) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York. The service is scheduled to commence on July 8.
This operation will be conducted under a collaborative agreement within the Abra Group, utilizing Airbus A330 aircraft from the Spanish carrier Wamos Air. The route will feature three weekly frequencies distributed as follows:
- From Rio de Janeiro: Flights will depart on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 21:55, arriving in New York at 06:55 the following day (local time).
- From New York (JFK): Departures are scheduled for Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 23:00, arriving in Rio de Janeiro at 09:55 the following day (local time).
Fleet Evolution and U.S. Network
The launch of this route coincides with the announcement that GOL will incorporate five Airbus A330-900neo aircraft into its fleet. This transition represents a significant technical leap for the company, which currently operates its international routes to North America exclusively with the Boeing 737 MAX.
With this addition, New York positions itself as the airline’s third destination in U.S. territory. Currently, GOL’s network in the country is structured as follows:
- Miami: Operated from Belém, Brasilia, Fortaleza, and Asunción (the latter two starting in June).
- Orlando: Operated from Fortaleza and Brasilia.
Start of a European Expansion
The implementation of these long-haul operations is not an isolated event but the starting point of a more ambitious expansion plan. According to information provided by the company, bolstering the fleet with widebody aircraft will allow, in a later phase, the initiation of flights toward Europe.
This strategy solidifies GOL’s position within the transcontinental market, leveraging Abra Group synergies to compete on high-density, high-yield routes.
