Iberia is inaugurating its direct operations between Madrid and Newark Liberty International Airport this Sunday, strengthening the airline’s presence in North America.
Airbus A321XLR: Efficiency and Comfort Over the North Atlantic
The Newark route will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, the narrow-body, ultra-long-range aircraft that is transforming transatlantic travel. Currently, the company already has seven units in its fleet.
This aircraft is designed to offer a premium flight experience on long-haul routes within a single-aisle configuration:
- Total Capacity: 182 seats distributed across two classes (Business and Economy).
- Airspace Cabin: Equipped with advanced LED lighting and a superior sense of spaciousness.
- Onboard Comfort: Larger overhead bins for carry-on luggage.
- Versatility: Allows for transatlantic operations with significantly higher fuel efficiency than preceding models.

Expansion in the New York Metropolitan Area
With the addition of Newark, Iberia increases its offering to three daily flights between Madrid and the New York area. The operation is split into two daily frequencies to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and one daily frequency to Newark.
This dual-airport strategy aims to provide passengers with greater scheduling and geographic flexibility. According to María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Commercial, Network Development, and Alliances Director, the Newark route is particularly valuable for the corporate segment due to its agile and direct access to Manhattan’s financial district, optimizing travel times for short-duration business trips.
Record Growth for Summer Season
The launch of this route coincides with the start of the summer season (beginning March 29), a period during which Iberia has scheduled the highest capacity in its history for the U.S. and Canadian markets:
- New York Offering: 352,055 seats have been made available, representing a 43% increase compared to the previous year.
- Total North American Capacity: The airline will put 1,280,254 seats up for sale (19.02% more than last summer).
- Weekly Frequencies: Up to 166 weekly flights will be operated, compared to 144 in the previous season.
In addition to the consolidation of Newark, Iberia is reinforcing its long-haul network with the opening of Toronto and the first full summer season for the Orlando route.
This deployment positions the United States as Iberia’s most relevant corporate market outside of Spain, reaffirming its commitment to high-efficiency transatlantic connectivity.
