ITA Airways has officially become a full member of Star Alliance, solidifying the Italian flag carrier’s integration into the world’s largest aviation alliance. This incorporation, effective as of April 1, strengthens Italy’s connectivity with more than 1,150 global destinations and marks a new phase in the company’s growth strategy.
An Integration Led by Lufthansa Group
The Italian airline’s accession process was overseen by the Lufthansa Group, whose expert teams facilitated an intensive integration program over recent months.
During the official ceremony held at the Piazza di Spagna Lounge at Rome-Fiumicino Airport, industry leaders highlighted the collaborative effort. Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO of Star Alliance, welcomed the company as the 26th member of the network, emphasizing that this union not only expands the alliance’s footprint in Southern Europe but also elevates the customer experience through shared benefits and an optimized logistical network.

Global Connectivity and Passenger Benefits
The entry of ITA Airways adds significant value to the alliance’s infrastructure:
- Operational Reach: The airline, which carries over 16 million passengers annually, adds more than 350 daily flights to the global network.
- Strategic Hubs: Connections from the Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate hubs are strengthened; these airports are already collectively served by 17 alliance member airlines.
- Travel Experience: Customers now benefit from through check-in, baggage tracking, and a network spanning more than 1,150 destinations across 190 countries.
- Loyalty Programs: Reciprocal recognition of frequent flyer programs has been established, allowing for the accrual and redemption of miles across the entire network.

Strengthening the Premium Segment
The integration also benefits high-value passengers. Customers with Star Alliance Gold status now have access to ITA Airways’ lounges in Rome, Milan, and Catania. Likewise, the Italian airline’s passengers will be able to access the world’s most extensive network of airport lounges, enhancing the company’s premium value proposition.
With this integration, Star Alliance reaches 26 member airlines and an offering of more than 17,500 daily flights. For ITA Airways, this move represents a historic milestone that not only improves its international competitiveness but also ensures seamless connectivity between Southern Europe and key international markets, unlocking a joint value proposition with Lufthansa Group that will benefit the entire global aviation ecosystem.
