In anticipation of its centenary in 2026, Lufthansa will operate an Airbus A321neo featuring a commemorative livery that tells the personal stories of its workforce. Under the motto “Made by many. Remembered by all,” the airline seeks to pay tribute to the individuals who have shaped the company throughout its 100-year history.
A Design with Employee DNA
Lufthansa Airlines CEO, Jens Ritter, emphasized that every employee—whether in the air or on the ground—defines the airline’s identity. To reflect this, the company invited all Lufthansa Group personnel to submit anecdotes and proposals via the corporate intranet.
From the proposals received, a jury selected the top 20, which were then put to a vote among the staff. Ultimately, twelve motifs were chosen to adorn the aircraft, which has been christened “Hamm.”
Stories of Yesterday and Today: From Historic Milestones to Personal Moments
The selection of images covering the fuselage of the Airbus A321neo (registration D-AEIM) is diverse and spans multiple facets of the company’s history:
- Historic Milestones: Includes the first scheduled inter-German flight following the country’s division, operated between Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig in 1989.
- Personal Stories: Highlights the account of two cabin crew members who met while skiing during a layover in Vancouver; their drawing in the mountains is now part of the design.
- Corporate Identity: A design from Lufthansa Technik shows two interlocking hands, symbolizing the team spirit that prevails throughout the organization.
- Aviation Pioneers: Historic images have been integrated, such as those of the airline’s first two female pilots, Nicola Lisy and Evi Hetzmannseder.

Innovation and Connectivity in the Livery
The design is visually integrated into the well-known “XXL Crane” logo, which spans the entire aircraft. In addition to the initial twelve motifs, more employee stories will be added progressively throughout the year.
A relevant technological feature is the inclusion of a QR code next to each image on the aircraft. By scanning it, passengers and aviation enthusiasts can access a landing page with detailed information and the background story of each selected motif.
Expansion of the 100th Anniversary Fleet
This Airbus A321neo is not the only aircraft sporting the centenary colors. Currently, the airline already operates a commemorative fleet that includes:
- Two Airbus A320neos.
- One Airbus A350-900.
- One Airbus A380.
- One Boeing 747-8.
- One Boeing 787-9.
By autumn 2026, the Airbus A350-1000 is expected to join as the seventh member of this special fleet, consolidating the company’s global celebration across its European and international routes.
