German carrier Lufthansa has announced the implementation of a special flight schedule to mitigate the impact of a full-day walkout called by the Vereinigung Cockpit pilot union. The industrial action, scheduled for Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13, 2026, will affect a portion of operations; however, the airline expects to maintain more than 50% of its original flight program throughout both days.
Operational Status and Contingency Measures
Despite the union’s pressure, the airline has managed to protect a significant portion of its international network. For long-haul connections, the proportion of operational flights will rise to 60%.
Francesco Sciortino, Hub Manager in Frankfurt and Accountable Manager for Lufthansa Airlines, emphasized that the absolute priority is ensuring passengers reach their destinations. The contingency plan is built upon the following pillars:
- Volunteer Pilots: Numerous aviators have volunteered to cover shifts during Thursday and Friday.
- Group Support: Other Lufthansa Group airlines and partner carriers will take over flights to and from the Frankfurt and Munich hubs.
- Fleet Optimization: Larger capacity aircraft (up-gauging) will be deployed on selected routes to maximize passenger throughput on remaining scheduled flights.

Impact on Subsidiaries and Cargo Division
The operational situation varies across different business units and subsidiaries:
Lufthansa Cargo
The cargo division is demonstrating notable resilience. Lufthansa Cargo will be able to operate over 80% of its scheduled freighter program, minimizing disruptions to global supply chains during the two-day strike.
Subsidiaries
- Lufthansa City Airlines: Will operate its full schedule on both Thursday and Friday.
- Lufthansa CityLine: While affected by the walkout on Thursday, the airline expects to recover nearly its entire flight program by Friday.
Geopolitical Exemptions
In an unusual move, the union has decided to exempt flights bound for the Middle East from the strike due to the current geopolitical climate. This measure ensures the operation of a flight from Frankfurt to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, scheduled for this Thursday.
Passenger Information
Lufthansa has activated direct communication channels to manage potential disruptions:
- Active Notifications: Customers whose flights are affected will be notified via email.
- Confirmation by Omission: Passengers who do not receive direct contact can assume, for the time being, that their flight remains scheduled.
- Self-Service: It is strongly recommended to check flight status on the official website (lufthansa.com) or via the airline’s mobile app.
- Travel Agencies: Passengers who booked through intermediaries should contact their travel agency directly for information.
The airline urged all travelers to keep their contact details updated in their booking profiles to receive timely alerts regarding any itinerary changes.
