Lufthansa to Maintain 60% of Long-Haul Network Despite Pilot Strike Scheduled for Thursday and Friday

German carrier Lufthansa has announced the implementation of a special flight schedule to mitigate the impact of a full-day walkout called by the Vereinigung Cockpit pilot union. The industrial action, scheduled for Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13, 2026, will affect a portion of operations; however, the airline expects to maintain more than 50% of its original flight program throughout both days.

Operational Status and Contingency Measures

Despite the union’s pressure, the airline has managed to protect a significant portion of its international network. For long-haul connections, the proportion of operational flights will rise to 60%.

Francesco Sciortino, Hub Manager in Frankfurt and Accountable Manager for Lufthansa Airlines, emphasized that the absolute priority is ensuring passengers reach their destinations. The contingency plan is built upon the following pillars:

Lufthansa Group Achieves Record Revenue of €39.6 Billion in 2025

Impact on Subsidiaries and Cargo Division

The operational situation varies across different business units and subsidiaries:

Lufthansa Cargo

The cargo division is demonstrating notable resilience. Lufthansa Cargo will be able to operate over 80% of its scheduled freighter program, minimizing disruptions to global supply chains during the two-day strike.

Subsidiaries

Geopolitical Exemptions

In an unusual move, the union has decided to exempt flights bound for the Middle East from the strike due to the current geopolitical climate. This measure ensures the operation of a flight from Frankfurt to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, scheduled for this Thursday.

Passenger Information

Lufthansa has activated direct communication channels to manage potential disruptions:

The airline urged all travelers to keep their contact details updated in their booking profiles to receive timely alerts regarding any itinerary changes.
