WestJet and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) have strengthened their codeshare agreement for the second time in three months, optimizing summer connectivity between Canada and Scandinavia. This expansion is built upon the new non-stop route between Halifax Stanfield International Airport and Copenhagen-Castrup Airport.
Strengthening the Transatlantic Network
The expansion of this strategic alliance allows passengers from both airlines to access a more robust network during the summer season. WestJet now offers its customers the ability to travel to multiple destinations in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland under a single ticket, featuring streamlined baggage transfers and the capacity to earn benefits through the WestJet Rewards program.
For its part, SAS has integrated its code into WestJet’s seasonal service connecting the Danish capital with Halifax. This measure facilitates direct access to the Atlantic Canada region for travelers from across Europe and the global SAS network.
New Destinations Available from Atlantic Canada
Thanks to this collaboration, passengers based in Eastern Canada now have one-stop connections to key economic and tourism hubs in Northern Europe:
- Sweden: Stockholm and Gothenburg.
- Norway: Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, and Trondheim.
- Denmark: Aalborg (in addition to the Copenhagen hub).
- Finland: Helsinki.
The direct service between Halifax and Copenhagen operates four times per week during the summer months, complementing other access points that the Canadian carrier already maintains through codeshares via Paris and London.
Strategic and Economic Impact
John Weatherill, WestJet Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted that this enhanced partnership reinforces a joint effort to connect networks strategically. According to the executive, the inclusion of SAS—recognized with a five-star rating by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX)—provides greater options for both business and leisure travelers.
In addition to operational benefits, this increase in seat capacity and connectivity is expected to boost tourism in Atlantic Canada, supporting local businesses and facilitating travel for friends and family during the peak season.
