American Airlines Modernizes Boarding at Dallas/Fort Worth with Electronic Gate Technology

American Airlines will begin the large-scale implementation of electronic boarding gates (e-gates) at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) starting this summer. Following a successful pilot phase conducted in November 2025, the airline aims to transform the passenger experience through a more agile, intuitive, and consistent process at its primary hub.

This initiative positions American Airlines as the first major U.S. network carrier to deploy dormakaba electronic boarding gates on a massive scale at a major airport, starting with the new Terminal C expansion at DFW.

Technological Innovation for Efficient Flow

The airline will deploy approximately 20 dormakaba Argus Air XS e-gates, designed to optimize every stage of the pre-departure process. These devices do not merely modernize airport infrastructure; they redefine the interaction between passengers and ground staff.

The primary benefits of this technology include:

A More Intuitive Travel Experience

For Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, boarding is a critical moment in customer perception. “This innovation is part of a deeper shift toward a more intuitive journey, combining technology and service to guide customers with greater ease and confidence,” the executive stated.

For his part, Jim Moses, Senior Vice President of DFW Hub Operations, highlighted that this advancement keeps the human factor at the center of the strategy, simplifying processes without compromising the company’s rigorous security standards.

Infrastructure and Strategic Expansion

The new gates will debut in the expansions of DFW’s Terminals A and C, projects that are part of the airport’s multi-year modernization plan. However, the scope of this technology will not be limited to Texas; American Airlines plans to extend these e-gates to other hubs and major airports in the future, seeking to standardize the boarding experience across its entire global network.

An Evolving Digital Ecosystem

The implementation of e-gates adds to other recent American Airlines innovations aimed at improving the end-to-end journey:

With these investments, American Airlines reaffirms its commitment to offering a connected, modern experience that empowers customers with the right information at the right time.
