Etihad Airways has announced a historic expansion of its network in mainland China with the launch of five new routes and the addition of 28 weekly flights. This move represents one of the company’s largest capacity increases in a single market in recent years, strengthening the strategic corridor between Abu Dhabi and the Asian giant.
A Strategic Bet on the Asian Market
The expansion will increase the airline’s total operation to 35 weekly flights distributed across six key destinations within mainland China. This ambitious strategy aims not only to improve passenger connectivity but also to position Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi as the primary gateway between China and markets in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America.
All new operations will be serviced by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, configured with 28 Business Class seats and 262 in Economy, ensuring a consistent wide-body product throughout the region.
Strengthening the Alliance with China Eastern Airlines
A fundamental pillar of this growth is the Joint Venture agreement with China Eastern Airlines. All new routes will be integrated into this alliance, allowing for coordinated services at strategic hubs. Currently, China Eastern operates routes between China (Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi’an) and the United Arab Emirates, complementing Etihad’s offering and enhancing travel options for users in both countries.
Furthermore, the airline has reinforced its logistics capacity through a cargo collaboration with SF Airlines, optimizing the transport of goods through high-importance industrial and technological centers.
