The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the successful results of several Proof of Concept (PoC) trials, confirming that biometric and contactless international travel is now an achievable reality. These trials, conducted across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrate that digital identity can efficiently replace paper-based documentation for international journeys.
A Frictionless and Paperless Travel Experience
Trials performed under IATA’s Strategic Partners Program have validated how digital identity stored in mobile wallets, combined with biometric verification, enables seamless passenger journeys. This advancement eliminates the need for repetitive physical document checks at various airport touchpoints.
One of the most significant milestones of these PoCs was the demonstration that system interoperability is sufficiently advanced to support travel involving multiple airlines and various digital wallets. The solutions tested included:
- Apple Wallet (for U.S. passport holders).
- Google ID Pass (for U.S. and UK citizens).
- Digi Yatra, India’s national digital identity program.
- Other wallets such as SITA Wallet, Air New Zealand Wallet, and open-source solutions like Multipaz.
Three Key Trials for the Future of the Sector
To reach these conclusions, three pilot projects were carried out to analyze different aspects of technological integration:
- Connectivity on Transfer Flights: On a route involving Japan Airlines (Tokyo Haneda – Hong Kong – European Airport), passengers shared their identity data in advance. This allowed for biometric processing at both departure and transfer points using “touch-and-go” solutions.
- Direct Airline Management: On the Auckland – Hong Kong route, Air New Zealand allowed passengers to use their own digital wallets during booking and check-in. This facilitated remote biometric enrollment and contactless processing at airport checkpoints and customs.
- Full Interoperability Between Providers: In the city of Bengaluru, with the airline IndiGo, it was demonstrated that solutions from different providers can coexist within a single journey, allowing for a continuous flow from airport entry to boarding.
A Call to Action for Governments
Despite the technological success, global adoption depends on political will. Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, stressed that the industry has already proven that digital identity is both secure and efficient.
“For travelers to benefit from this modernization, governments must accelerate efforts to issue and accept Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs)—secure digital versions of passports,” Walsh stated.
According to the organization, governments must focus on three critical areas:
- Prepare to Issue: Establish the legal and technical foundations for DTCs within national programs.
- Be Ready to Accept: Ensure that border and visa systems can verify credentials issued by other states.
- Plan at Scale: Collaborate with international bodies to guarantee that the system is globally interoperable.
Next Steps
The results obtained by IATA, with the support of technology providers such as Amadeus, NEC, SITA, SICPA, Hopae, and Branchspace, make it clear that the technology is mature. The use of international standards (ISO, OpenID, and W3C) and the IATA Contactless Travel Directory ensures a robust security framework.
The next step for commercial aviation is no longer a matter of technical possibility, but of regulatory integration. The transition toward a model where passengers share their data securely and with consent before arriving at the airport promises to reduce queues, enhance security, and transform the operational efficiency of the world’s logistical hubs.
