Lufthansa Group has announced a strategic restructuring of its flight offerings for the upcoming summer season, reducing its global capacity by less than 1% in terms of Available Seat Kilometers (ASK). This measure seeks to mitigate the impact of rising operating costs and consolidate profitability across its six primary hubs in Europe.
European Network Consolidation and Fuel Savings
The decision to adjust the schedule responds directly to the need to eliminate short-haul routes that are not profitable under current market conditions. Due to the outbreak of conflict in Iran, jet fuel prices have doubled, forcing the company to implement stricter optimization measures.
Through this reconfiguration, the group projects the following operational results:
- Flight Reductions: A total of 20,000 short-haul flights will be removed from the scheduled program through October.
- Fuel Efficiency: An estimated saving of over 40,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel.
- Selective Capacity: While services are being canceled in Frankfurt and Munich, the group will simultaneously expand its existing routes in Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels.
Adjustments to Hubs and Group Airlines
The consolidation of the European network will be carried out in an integrated manner among the group’s network airlines: Lufthansa Airlines, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and ITA Airways. The adjustments will affect the six key hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome.

Affected Destinations and Route Reorganization
As part of the first phase of adjustments, the first 120 daily flight cancellations have already been implemented, effective until the end of May. Among the most significant changes are:
- Temporary Suspensions: Routes from Frankfurt to Bydgoszcz and Rzeszów (Poland), as well as to Stavanger (Norway), have been withdrawn from the current schedule.
- Connection Consolidation: Ten destinations have been reorganized to be served through other group hubs:
- Heringsdorf (HDF)
- Cork (ORK)
- Gdańsk (GDN)
- Ljubljana (LJU)
- Rijeka (RJK)
- Sibiu (SBZ)
- Stuttgart (STR)
- Trondheim (TRD)
- Tivat (TIV)
- Wrocław (WRO)
Despite these short-haul cuts, Lufthansa Group ensures that passengers will maintain access to its global network, specifically protecting long-haul connections.
Fuel Supply and Seasonal Outlook
For the coming months, the group expects to maintain a mostly stable fuel supply for the summer schedule. This security is supported by a combination of physical fuel procurement and price hedging strategies.
Medium-term route planning is currently being reviewed to guarantee the stability of the flight plan. The optimized schedule for the period starting in June will be officially published between late April and early May.
