Lufthansa has ushered in a new era of long-haul comfort with the departure of the first Airbus A380 featuring a completely renovated Business Class cabin. The aircraft, registered as D-AIMC, marks the beginning of an ambitious modernization program for its superjumbo fleet.
Comfort and Privacy: The New Thompson Cabin
The German flag carrier is retrofitting its Airbus A380 fleet to install an entirely new Business Class, designed to offer superior levels of privacy and rest. This configuration redefines the onboard experience of the world’s largest passenger aircraft by incorporating seats from the manufacturer Thompson.
The key features of the new cabin include:
- Premium Dimensions: The new seats boast a width of 58 cm and convert into a fully flat bed at least two meters in length.
- Direct Access: Each of the 68 seats in the cabin offers direct aisle access, eliminating the need to disturb other passengers.
- Flexible Privacy: Adjustable partitions have been installed, allowing travelers to customize their personal space according to their needs.
Entertainment Technology and Connectivity
In addition to furniture upgrades, the In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) system has been comprehensively updated to meet current technological demands. Passengers in the new Business Class now have 18-inch Panasonic screens at their disposal.
Highlights of the new system include:
- Bluetooth Connectivity: Users can pair their own wireless headphones to enjoy movies, series, and music.
- Intuitive Interface: A new user interface has been implemented across all cabin classes, facilitating easy access to digital newspapers and magazines.
- Immersive Experience: The system includes an interactive 3D moving map, cinema-quality sound, and external flight cameras.
Program Logistics at Elbe Flugzeugwerke
The technical modernization process is being carried out at the Elbe Flugzeugwerke facilities in Dresden, a program that commenced in early February of this year. The first aircraft, nicknamed “Mike-Charly,” completed its transformation in just under twelve weeks.
Following a ferry flight to Munich, the D-AIMC performed its inaugural flight with the new configuration this Thursday, operating route LH452 to Los Angeles.
Next Steps in Fleet Modernization
Lufthansa is not slowing down its upgrade operations. On the same day that work concluded on the first aircraft, modernization began on the next unit: D-AIMH “Mike-Hotel,” recognizable by its blue anniversary livery featuring the XXL-sized crane logo.
This retrofit program is being executed in parallel with routine aircraft maintenance tasks. According to the company’s official schedule, all eight of Lufthansa’s Airbus A380s are expected to feature the new Business Class cabin by mid-2027.
