Riyadh Air has taken a decisive step in shaping its route network by announcing three new non-stop routes, marking a transition from a brand-positioning phase toward the construction of a functional operational infrastructure. With the addition of Jeddah, Madrid, and Manchester, the new Saudi carrier brings its total number of confirmed destinations to six ahead of its official launch.

Network Consolidation: Six Confirmed Destinations

The airline’s recent expansion includes a strategic domestic route and two high-profile European connections. With this announcement, the company’s route map consists of the following official destinations:

  • Jeddah: A vital domestic trunk route for internal connectivity within the Kingdom.
  • Madrid: Strengthens the carrier’s presence in Southern Europe.
  • Manchester: Expands reach within the UK market.
  • London Heathrow, Dubai, and Cairo: Previously announced destinations that complete the current list.

Strategic Value: Uncontested Routes from the Capital

The announcement of Madrid and Manchester is particularly significant for Riyadh Airport. Unlike other highly competitive markets, these cities represent direct connections that currently do not exist from the Saudi capital.

While Saudia operates flights to Madrid (four times weekly) and Manchester (daily), it does so exclusively from Jeddah Airport. By launching these direct services from the capital, Riyadh Air seeks to define itself as a global hub rather than simply mimicking established operators.

Operational Challenges and the Arrival of the Dreamliner Fleet

Despite the rapid growth of its route map, the airline faces a central tension between its ambitions and its current physical capacity. At present, operations are limited to the London Heathrow route using a single Boeing 787-9 leased from Oman Air. This service, active since October of last year, is restricted exclusively to employees and their families; therefore, tickets are not yet available to the general public.

To address this limitation, the company maintains a firm order for 39 Boeing 787-9s (with options for an additional 33). The airline expects to receive its first proprietary aircraft “within the coming weeks.”

Riyadh Air continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating a global hub in the Saudi capital by selecting high-value strategic routes that avoid direct competition in the Riyadh market. The immediate success of this phase will depend on the effective delivery of its new Boeing 787-9 fleet, which will allow these announced routes to be transformed into commercial operations open to the public.
