Hong Kong-based Cathay Group has signed a firm order with Airbus for the acquisition of two additional Airbus A350F aircraft. This strategic transaction brings the airline’s total order book for the next-generation freighter to eight units, consolidating the modernization plans for its cargo division.
Strategic Boost and Global Connectivity
The addition of these two airframes will reinforce the company’s operational capacity from its primary hub in Hong Kong. According to Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer of Cathay Group, this forward-looking investment reflects the company’s confidence in its long-term growth prospects and supports Cathay Cargo’s objective of positioning itself as the world’s leading air cargo carrier.
On the other hand, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales for Airbus’s Commercial Aircraft business, highlighted that this follow-on order is a clear sign of the A350F’s leadership in efficiency and capacity within the next-generation sector. Furthermore, he underscored the operational advantage provided by the technical and operational commonality between this model and the existing Airbus passenger fleet currently operated by the airline.

Technical Performance and Operational Efficiency
The A350F has been engineered with advanced technology to meet the evolving demands of the global freight transport market. Its primary technical specifications include:
- Range and Payload: Capable of carrying up to 111 tonnes of payload on long-haul international routes, with a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometers).
- Advanced Materials: Its airframe is composed of more than 70% advanced materials, enabling a weight reduction of 46 tonnes compared to competing aircraft types.
With this supplemental order, Cathay Group optimizes the efficiency of its freight network by leveraging the technical commonality of the A350 family, directly accelerating its decarbonization process within the air cargo business through the European manufacturer’s most advanced technology.
