JetSMART Eyes Expansion From Medellin: Files For Caracas and Buenos Aires-Aeroparque Routes

Ultra-low-cost carrier JetSMART has submitted a formal application to Colombia’s civil aviation authority (Aerocivil) to launch two new international routes from Medellin. With this initiative, the airline aims to expand its regional connectivity and enter new strategic markets across South America.

Regional Expansion and New Markets

The low-cost carrier’s petition outlines direct connectivity from Jose Maria Cordova International Airport, which serves Medellin, to two major capital cities in the region: Caracas (Venezuela) and Jorge Newbery Airfield in Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The primary objective of this strategic move is to broaden the company’s destination network and consolidate its international footprint from Colombian territory.

Operational Details of the New Routes

According to the official documentation filed with the aviation authority, the proposed flight operations are structured under the following technical and commercial specifications:

Impact on Competition and Connectivity

Should the government entity grant approval, the launch of these flights will have a significant impact on the region’s commercial aviation landscape:

Entry into the Venezuelan Market

The link between Medellin and Caracas would mark JetSMART’s official entry into the Venezuelan market. On this sector, the carrier would enter into direct competition with incumbent operators Wingo and Avior Airlines.

First Direct Route Between Colombia and Argentina

On the other hand, the route to Buenos Aires-Aeroparque would represent a major milestone for the company, becoming its first direct route between Colombia and Argentina and facilitating access to the Argentine capital’s downtown airport.

The commencement of operations remains subject to evaluation and subsequent approval by Aerocivil. Upon receiving the green light, the airline will initiate the corresponding commercial phases for ticket sales and slot allocation at the respective international airports.
