Qantas’ newest Airbus A321XLR has rolled out of the Airbus paint shop in Hamburg, Germany, sporting a special livery inspired by the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Christened Coral Sea, this aircraft is the seventh of a total 48-unit order destined for the Australian carrier’s fleet.
A Design with Purpose: Celebrating Marine Conservation
The striking paintwork spans both sides of the 44-meter-long aircraft. The design is the result of a collaborative effort celebrating the airline’s long-term partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF), an organization it has supported since 2009.
- Livery Details: The fuselage features depictions of sea turtles, clownfish, and reef corals rendered in bold, vibrant colors.
- Financial Commitment: Qantas has committed $10 million over a 10-year period through the Reef Restoration Fund.
- Fund Objective: To support scientists, Traditional Owners, and local tourism operators in restoring coral across the Great Barrier Reef and other Australian reef systems.

The Managing Director of the GBRF, Anna Marsden, highlighted that this aircraft will carry the reef’s story to millions of people annually, inspiring them not only to visit this ecosystem but also to care for its future.
Strategic Role of the Airbus A321XLR in Qantas’ Network
The A321XLR represents a significant evolution for the airline’s short- and medium-haul fleet. The model is capable of flying more than 3,000 additional kilometers compared to the Boeing 737 aircraft it replaces.
The carrier became the first operator of the type in the Asia-Pacific region when its initial unit, named Great Ocean Road, entered service in September 2025.
New Routes and Next-Generation Fleet Deployment
Throughout 2025, Qantas and its low-cost subsidiary Jetstar added 10 new routes to Queensland. The expansion included international links from Brisbane to Vanuatu, Manila (Philippines), and Palau, alongside domestic connections such as Cairns–Sunshine Coast and Darwin–Gold Coast.
The rollout of next-generation aircraft is progressing as follows:
- Current Operations: The A321XLR recently launched domestic operations between Brisbane and Perth, while Airbus A220 flights between Brisbane and Cairns commenced earlier this month.
- Upcoming International Milestone: Qantas’ first international A321XLR service is scheduled to launch this coming October, providing a direct link between Brisbane and Manila.
Qantas pilots are expected to perform the delivery flight of Coral Sea from Germany to Australia next month, marking the official integration of the group’s seventh aircraft of this type into commercial service and bolstering its operational capacity in both domestic and international markets.
