Air Transat and Iberia have announced a new strategic alliance through an interline agreement designed to facilitate air connectivity between Canada and Spain. This strategic collaboration will allow passengers to connect efficiently through the Spanish capital to multiple regional destinations, optimizing the international travel experience.
Network Expansion via Madrid
The core of this agreement lies in the connectivity offered by Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. Following this alliance, passengers of the Canadian carrier will gain access to more than 20 popular destinations within Spanish territory operated by the European airline.
Among the prominent routes benefiting from this agreement are:
- Bearic Islands: Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.
- Canary Islands: Tenerife, via its two airports.
- Iberian Peninsula: High-demand tourism and business markets such as Alicante.
With this move, the airline seeks to consolidate its leadership position in the transatlantic market.

Consolidation of the Spanish Market and Passenger Benefits
For the North American carrier, Spain represents one of its most vital international markets. Its network currently spans five Spanish destinations, four of which operate year-round: Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, and Valencia. Furthermore, the recent addition of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to its winter schedule reinforces its seasonal portfolio aimed at sun-and-beach tourism.
The implementation of this interline agreement translates into direct operational and comfort advantages for travelers, who will benefit from:
- Single Itinerary: Booking a single ticket for the entire journey.
- Baggage Through-Checking to Final Destination: Eliminating the need to re-check baggage at the connecting hub.
- Disruption Protection: Guaranteed coverage and assistance in the event of flight delays or schedule disruptions.
Strategic Synergy in North America
For the Spanish legacy carrier, the agreement coincides with a key operational milestone: the launch of its new direct route between Toronto and Madrid, scheduled for June 13. This timing underscores the IAG-owned airline’s commitment to strengthening commercial ties and connectivity between North America and Spain.
Iberia has stated that it is actively exploring new collaboration opportunities in Toronto. The medium-term objective is to bolster domestic connectivity within Canada, comprehensively enhancing the value proposition for international customers.
