Avianca has formalized its intent to strengthen air connectivity between Colombia and Argentina by filing an application for authorization to operate new direct routes. This initiative aims to connect the cities of Cartagena and Cali with Buenos Aires, consolidating the airline’s footprint in the South American market.
Application Details and Projected Frequencies
According to the documentation submitted by the airline, the strategic planning envisions consistent, daily connectivity for both markets.
- Frequency: Each route is projected to operate with 7 weekly flights, translating to one daily flight per leg.
- Destinations in Buenos Aires: The application encompasses operations to both Ministro Pistarini International Airport (Ezeiza) and Jorge Newbery Airfield (Aeroparque).
Capacity and Traffic Rights
To execute these new connections, Avianca has defined the technical and operational specifications required to ensure route efficiency.
Assigned Fleet
Operations will be conducted using Airbus A319 or Airbus A320 family aircraft, which are efficient models for medium-to-long-range sectors within the region.
Operational Legal Framework
The application requests that the flights be operated under Third and Fourth Freedoms of the Air, which authorize the airline to embark and disembark passengers, mail, and cargo from its home country to the destination State, and vice versa.

Impact on the Bilateral Market
Should it receive approval from the relevant authorities, Avianca will strategically consolidate its position in the connectivity market between both nations.
- Market Exclusivity: The company would become the sole airline operating these routes non-stop, eliminating the need for layovers for passengers traveling from Cali or Cartagena to the Argentine capital.
- Current Operations: This expansion will build upon the four routes the airline already operates between both countries: Bogota – Ezeiza, Bogota – Aeroparque, Medellin – Ezeiza, Bogota – Cordoba.
The launch of these operations remains subject to final evaluation and approval by the competent regulatory bodies. This strategic move represents a key step in Avianca’s growth plans, which are aimed at diversifying departure points in Colombia and decentralizing the passenger flow that traditionally connects through the airline’s primary hub.
