SAS Announces Largest Investment in its History: Orders Up to 40 Airbus A330 Aircraft

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced the largest investment in the company’s history with the acquisition of up to 40 Airbus widebody aircraft. This strategic move represents a significant step in its long-term ambition to strengthen global connectivity between Scandinavia and major international markets.

This strategic acquisition combines the introduction of the new, fuel-efficient Airbus A330-900neo with additional Airbus A330-300 units, which have been secured to support short-term growth ahead of the new fleet’s delivery.

With a total list value exceeding $10 billion, this deal stands as the highest-value aircraft order ever placed by SAS.

This historic transaction builds on the record order announced last year for 55 Embraer E195-E2 regional aircraft. Alongside the ongoing renewal of its single-aisle Airbus A320neo fleet, these investments represent the most significant fleet modernization for SAS in decades, delivering substantial improvements in fuel efficiency, acoustic performance, and passenger experience.

“This is the largest investment in our company’s history and a clear sign of our confidence in the future,” said Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS. “Strong global links create opportunities for businesses, support jobs, attract investment, and bolster competitiveness across our entire region.”

Socioeconomic Impact and GDP Growth by 2030

Alongside this announcement, SAS presented a new analysis that quantifies, for the first time, the potential socioeconomic impact of a significant expansion at Copenhagen Airport by 2030. The report highlights the economic benefits derived from the airline’s planned increase in international access for Denmark, the Öresund region, and Scandinavia as a whole.

According to the analysis’s projections, if SAS’s anticipated growth materializes, the following milestones will be achieved by 2030:

Sustainability and the Strategic Role of the Copenhagen Hub

Coinciding with the celebration of its 80th anniversary since its founding in 1946, SAS reaffirms Copenhagen Airport’s role as its strategic global hub. This airport serves as the primary gateway connecting regional travelers, communities, and businesses with destinations across Europe, North America, and Asia.

The company emphasized that this growth will be executed with sustainability at the core of its strategy. To advance this commitment, SAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the firm SkyKraft to explore the co-development of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), driving the long-term transition toward a cleaner air transport operation.

This massive investment provides SAS with the operational flexibility required to capture future demand, optimize cost efficiency, and expand its global reach.
