United Airlines and DIRECTV have finalized a strategic alliance to stream live television—including the season’s premier sporting events—directly to individual in-seat In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) screens equipped with Starlink technology. This initiative promises to transform the passenger experience by offering complimentary access to real-time content through the aviation industry’s fastest and most reliable wireless connectivity service.

In-Flight Sports Coverage and Available Channels

The collaboration between the carrier and the content provider will be available until July 20, allowing football fans to closely follow all the action from the summer’s biggest sporting tournament right through to the final match. This service will initially be deployed on up to 150 Starlink-enabled aircraft.

Through DIRECTV and the BBC, passengers aboard these aircraft will enjoy free access to more than a dozen live television channels. The programming lineup includes:

  • Sports & Entertainment: FOX, Fox Sports 1, Apple F1, ABC, ESPN, TNT, TBS, and NBC.
  • News & Business: CNN, CBS, and BBC News.

This selection of networks ensures comprehensive coverage encompassing live football, global sports disciplines, breaking news, weather reports, financial updates, and varied entertainment.

Technological Deployment and Fleet Expansion

The operation of this service relies on an advanced digital infrastructure. The initiative utilizes the “Viasat Live TV” and “Thales 360” web applications to capture live television content and display it on the seatback screens, streaming it directly to the aircraft via Starlink’s high-speed connectivity.

In 2024, United Airlines set a new benchmark in aerial connectivity by signing the largest agreement of its kind in the industry with SpaceX. This contract aims to bring Starlink’s Wi-Fi service to the airline’s entire mainline and regional fleet free of charge for members of its MileagePlus loyalty program.

Currently, the carrier’s connectivity timeline is progressing steadily:

  • Current Status: Starlink is already active on more than 400 aircraft across United’s mainline and United Express fleets.
  • Projection: The airline expects to equip its entire fleet before the end of 2027.

Future of IFE: Dynamic, Real-Time Content

Andrew Nocella, Chief Commercial Officer at United Airlines, highlighted the company’s leadership in implementing this technology, noting that the airline is installing Starlink on more aircraft than any other carrier worldwide. The partnership with DIRECTV represents an opportunity to offer customers a glimpse into the future of In-Flight Entertainment during one of the most popular sporting events on the planet.

“Our journey began nearly a decade ago with the decision to install screens at every seat. We now have more than 160,000 screens across our fleet, with plans to practically double that figure soon through new deliveries and retrofits,” Nocella stated.

The executive emphasized that the company’s ultimate goal was never to maintain static screens with video-on-demand content, but rather to evolve toward dynamic platforms offering real-time broadcasts, replicating the connectivity experience of a smartphone.

The alliance between United Airlines and DIRECTV, powered by the Starlink satellite network, redefines the standard of passenger service in modern commercial aviation. By migrating from static entertainment systems to dynamic, real-time broadcasts, the airline optimizes the travel experience for its passengers during peak global event seasons while cementing the technological foundation to meet its goal of a fully connected fleet by late 2027.
